Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Wireless FreeNet?
A computer network, that uses standards-based ('WiFi') wireless networking
equipment, to join two or more locations without charge.
Typically, FreeNets are setup by volunteers or hobbyists, using roof-top
antennas and readily available electronics (radios). FreeNets primarily use
TCP/IP networking - making them Internet-like networks. A FreeNet can exist in
isolation (servicing a small number of houses/locations), but can also be joined
together to make a community-wide Intranet.
How do I make my own FreeNet?
You will need:
An external, omni-directional antenna
A radio. Typically these are sold as self contained units called Access Points
(APs)
A cable to connect the antenna to the AP
A firewall to protect your local network from the 'public' FreeNet
How do I join an Existing FreeNet?
You will need:

A radio. Typically these are sold as self contained units called Access Points
(APs), and you will configure this to be in 'client' (a.k.a. Station) mode so
that it connects to an existing AP.
