Success Story 1 - 30km with a Minitar MNWAPB AP

I installed a 28.9 km link for the WAFreenet as below. See this map.

North Fremantle Martin Mast
Antenna  18 dBi (Modified Galaxy)   180 degree Waveguide
AP  60 mW Minitar MNWAPB   30mW Lucent

The performance has been outstanding.

bulletPing loss very low.
See the image below, that shows the % ping loss on the link over a full week. Most of the time, there is zero, or near zero loss. The high-loss events (Friday and Monday) were not caused by the Minitar, but rather excessive noise/traffic at the Martin Mast end.

bulletSystem Uptime very high.
The image is taken from the Minitar AP at the North Fremantle end of the link. This AP is mounted in a weatherproof enclosure, on the antenna mounting pole. That is; the AP is mounted outside. As you can see - the AP has been continuously 'up' for more than 1 month. When I took this image, it was 33 days since I last changed the AP configuration, at which time it reset its clock to '0:00:00'. A point to note, Perth had some extreme temperatures over this time (All of Feb 2004), including maxima over 40 deg C. I would imagine the temperature of the Minitar AP exceeded 50 deg C at times.

When I first started trying to setup my own wireless equipment I found it to be one of the most difficult and annoying things I have ever attempted.  With little experience in WiFi technology I was soon caught in a seemingly endless cycle of spending on equipment that didn't work, was messy and was a drain on my pocket.  After seeing Rob about getting me on the right track with some gear all my problems were gone.  Rob supplied me with everything I needed and even tested it all for me himself before I picked it all up, I even traded in my old equipment that I had spent so much on for a massive discount that left me with even more money in my pocket.  Once I got home it only took a short time to install and I was particularly impressed by the custom wall jack that I wanted which Rob whipped up in no time and at little expense which was a big plus for me because guess what, no more ugly holes in my walls, roof or window screen with big ugly black cables.  I was so happy with the service and quality that right there and then I also purchased equipment for my neighbour who has had the same success in connecting to me and others.  If your thinking about purchasing anything off Rob trust me you are going to get the best of everything that works, I couldn't be happier.  Thank you so very much Rob.

My experience with freenet has been great. I had to buy a certain antenna, cable and connections. I found that the freenet prices were on par with other Internet sites and in some cases even better. I had a small hiccup with the cabling and Rob was more than helpful and very accommodating. All in all they were very helpful.

I have always been interested in computers and networking. After reading many websites and forums I contracted the "wireless disease" so mentioned on e3, hence I began scouting the metro area for the infamous galaxy dishes and fiddling with wireless networking gear. As anybody who was dabbled with wireless gear knows, tracking down some of those custom cables and connectors can be quite tedious, so after near completing my first galaxy mods I contacted Rob, who was more than happy to help and provide everything I needed to finish the mods and attach them to my pc, including some of the more elusive connectors. Since then I have successfully setup a wireless link using some of the more elaborate wireless gear (external enclosures, RPOE etc) and my original modded galaxy antennas. Rob Clark was once again an eager and a very resourceful person to bounce ideas off indicating that he was genuinely interested in my little project. As such Rob readily supplied all the gear I needed, at very competitive prices. Accordingly, I have no trouble recommending Rob to others who want to venture into the world of wireless networking.

Thank you very much Rob

After 6 or more months, I finally was able to start buying everything I needed to build a wireless link to a friends place.  This was probably the 3rd time I’ve needed to buy something outside of eBay.  Within 15 minutes of sending my order to Rob, I had a very informative reply (including how the galaxy mods were done by him).

After wiring the money over, Rob had sent the package out on the same day. Unfortunately the package never arrived and I contacted Rob again who was a bit shocked about what had happened (this is the first time anything had been lost in the mail).

But unlike so many other online companies’ I’ve dealt with, Rob helped me out and sent me replacement cable for the lost package free of charge.

I knew when I was buying from FreeNet Antennas that it had a good reputation but with all the help and advice given, I would only buy from this company from now on when it comes to wireless.

Hi Rob,

Firstly let me thank you for helping with the right choice of antennas. I purchased 2 MNM-5 kits and 1 MNM-360.

After a bit of fumbling around in the Minitar setup I finally got them working. They work so well in fact that I only had the aerial supplied with the Minitar connected at my server end and my clients some 300 meters away (using there Antcap antennas)  could access it without any problems. After some more testing (with the wave guide 360 antenna up) I discovered that going up to 8km wasn’t even a problem as long as there was line of sight. For this reason I would recommend you and www.freenet-antennas.com to anyone interested in forming a long range wireless network or as in my case to share ADSL between a group of friends.

Tim was desperate for a solution that *worked* and came to Freenet for help:-

09/04/04 16:14

"I currently have an SMC 2804 Wideband Router that includes a wireless access point (b/g) but I've found this to be pretty hopeless in my situation - which is an apartment building with the access point located on the ground floor and the laptop upstairs and back a little bit.

Actual distance is less than 40 feet - but the signal doesn't go through the concrete floor - I need to move the laptop to the balcony to get reception. (This is less than 10 feet!!!! from the access point).

So - like everyone I'm after something **that works**!"

Our NSW branch responded with a solution for Tim that totally solved his problem while also protecting his wifi network and saving Tim money. We suggested Tim use one of our inexpensive directional 'Panel Antennas" to focus the signal from his access point upstairs from a flagpole on the ground floor.

Here is Tim's email describing how our solution worked for him:-

"Hi Freenet NSW,

Finally got around to installing it - it has made an enormous improvement. I used to get a lot of dropouts which usually gives Windows a lot of grief, but since installing the new antenna have not had one single dropout, plus I can sit at the dining table and still have a perfect connection (the old antenna never reached that far into the unit).

Regards,

Tim"

Another satisfied Freenet-Antennas customer ... if it won't work, we won't sell it to you!

Hi Rob,

Just wanted to thank you for the advice and supply of the wave guide for our golf club. It worked a treat. Our signal strength went to 100% at the club house and above 50% through a thick wall and 400m away at the house. It is all working very well.

Our IT guy took one look at the wave guide and said it would never work. He wanted to use a $250 Netgear antenna. His eyes nearly popped when he saw the signal strength.

Many thanks

Peter
